Anyone who has fallen for the band’s breakthrough, Juno Award-winning record You Forgot it in People can attest to that statement. One might think that so many cooks in the kitchen would lead to a jumbled, tasteless meal, but Broken Social Scene are masters of their craft. Hug of Thunder follows the band’s highly-acclaimed 2010 effort, Forgiveness Rock Record, and features guest appearances from Leslie Feist (yes, that Feist), Emily Haines of Metric, founding member Kevin Drew, in addition to offerings from original members–are you ready?–John Crossingham, Brendan Canning, Sam Goldberg, Charles Spearin, Ariel Engle, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan, Jimmy Shaw, Lisa Lobsinger, David French, Ohad Benchetrit, and Jason Collett. Hug of Thunder is here to is roll over you with it luscious waves of harmonious, diverse, and expansive sounds that both sample that raw feeling found in the band’s classic records and create something entirely new.
